Year 4

Autumn Term 2015

The children have started Year 4 with a positive attitude and are showing enthusiasm towards their learning. They are looking forward to learning about the Ancient Romans.

All the children have been read with and have been given a new reading record along with a new reading book. We have explained that the children should be reading at least 3 times a week at home and that an adult must sign the record to allow us to see that the reading has occurred. Ten entries in the reading record will result in a merit being awarded on their merit card. It is important that children not only read the text but that they also have an understanding of it. We encourage adults at home to question the children about their reading. We have example questions that can be provided on request.

This term the children will be learning German. We have already started lessons and the children have shown a keen attitude. Please ask your child to share what they have learnt, as it is important that the children practice new vocabulary as often as possible.

In Science, the children will be learning about ‘Living Things’. This will allow them to learn about plants and animals and how living things can be classified into different groups. Our topic after that will be ‘What’s that sound?’ where the children will study how sounds are made and how they can be changed.

The children will be given personal targets in Literacy and Numeracy and this will change as and when the children meet them. Again we encourage children to share these at home.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and this needs to be handed in no later than Tuesday morning.  Reading records must be in school every day to be monitored and to allow school staff to sign when they read with the children.

A reminder that children need plain tracksuit bottom/shorts and a plain T shirt for PE.

Miss Howe’s class will be taking part in weekly swimming lessons for their PE this term and this will rotate round the three classes over the year.

We look forward to sharing the exciting term ahead with you and the children.
